Jewellery Art winning the Latvian Public Media Award

On Saturday, 15 February, the winners of the Latvian Public Media Award in Culture “Kilograms kultūras 2024” were awarded in ten categories. In the category “Visual Art”, the prize was awarded to the exhibition “Touch-Sensitive” by the Latvian Jewellery Art Association (Museum of Decorative Arts and Design, curators Ginta Grūbe and Zane Vilka).

“The nominees for the Kilogram of Culture Award – the most original and high-quality Latvian cultural events of the past year – are nominated by a jury of culture professionals from the Latvian Public Media, but the final decision is made solely by viewers and listeners, voting in four ballots – spring, autumn, winter and final.

“The variety of jewellery materials is amazing – from precious stones to cords and recycled materials. The audience has been convinced by the very personal touch of 23 outstanding jewellery artists and their wearers, as we, as visitors to the exhibition, have been allowed to witness it,” commented Lilita Eglīte, a member of the jury. “The graphic sign of the exhibition with the fingerprint lines, the opportunity to watch the magic of jewellery making in the artist’s studio in photos and the fascinating dialogue between the jewellery in the showcase and the large-scale portrait and voice recording of the wearer. We involuntarily engage in a game – what would we choose in this variety of forms and materials?” The prize was presented by ceramicist, sculptor and chef José Javier Mansur-Garcia from Mexico.

“23 artists from 3 different generations can come together without arguing, but by talking to each other, thinking together and being very determined to achieve a result. A company is not just beauty, it is a conversation with a person. It is perhaps the most intimate form of art because it touches the human body. It’s about beauty in this rather harsh world. Maybe beauty will save us,” said Inese Baranovska, Head of the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design, when receiving the award.
