Jānis Vilks

Jānis Vilks (1971) has studied metal design and also stage design at the Art Academy of Latvia and has continued his education in a variety of stage design and painting masterclasses (1991-2000). Vilks has participated in group exhibitions since 1991 and his stage design work has received award – GRAND PRIX at the Prague Quadriennial of Performance Design and Space (1999). Mindset required for stage design helps him keep a fresh approach when working with metal.

Jānis Vilks’ main area of activity has became jewellery making. His jewellery is laconic in form with masterfully executed details and seeks to reveal the uniqueness of materials. Vilks works with precious metals and stones. He cuts stones himself and uses them for inlays, cameos and intaglio, as well as for miniature sculptures.
